Why Wells-by-The-Sea in Winter is bliss.

Wells in a Winter wonderland.

Wells-next-the-Sea is a proper honey pot in the Summer, with everyone buzzing in for Mr Whippy ice creams, bubble tea by the sea & famous French’s fish & chips perched on the harbour walls, or a drop of great wine and some tapas at North Norfolk Cellars. Kiss me quick!

But Flint Homes property buying agent owner, Phil Royle says it’s Winter when Wells becomes a wonderland.

One of the most charming seaside towns on the gorgeous North Norfolk coast is undeniably Wells. It holds a special allure with its mixture of habitats – from salt marshes, to deep water harbour, to pine forest, to creeks and inlets and onto one of the finest beaches in the county, if not country. Lush.

In Summer, it buzzes and there’s a bit of a race for space. But in Winter, Wells offers:

  1. Peace and Tranquility: In Winter, the usual summer crowds are gone, leaving the town peaceful and quiet. This serene atmosphere allows visitors to enjoy the beauty of the sea and the town's picturesque surroundings without the hustle and bustle of peak tourist season.

  2. Unique Winter Light: The low Winter sun creates a unique quality of light, casting long shadows and producing spectacular sunrises and sunsets. This light can enhance the beauty of the coastal landscape, making it a photographer's paradise.

  3. Wildlife Watching: Winter is an excellent time for birdwatching and seal spotting in and off Wells-next-the-Sea. The nearby salt marshes and nature reserves are home to a vast variety of wintering birds, including geese, ducks, and waders. The quieter environment and less greenery also means wildlife is more visible and less disturbed. Once you have seen the pink footed geese arrive on masse, your life is never the same.

  4. Bracing Walks: The coastal path and expansive sandy beach offers invigorating walks with utterly stunning views. The crisp, fresh sea air can be particularly refreshing in the Winter months, providing both physical exercise and mental rejuvenation. Grab the dog lead and go for it.

  5. Festive Atmosphere: The town often has a cozy, festive feel during the Winter months, with local shops and cafes offering seasonal treats. Holiday lights and decorations – including the famous festive crab and lobster pot trees on the harbour wall – add to the charm, making it a delightful place to visit around the Christmas season. And check out The Maltings for films and other top cultural events. Not to mention nearby Holkham by candlelight: amazing.

  6. Storm Watching: The dramatic Winter weather rolling in off the North Sea creates powerful and awe-inspiring seascapes. Grab a cup of tea and slice of cake, stay warm and dry, or take on the raw elements on the beach (check your tide times to be safe and not get cut off by the incoming tide!).

  7. Cozy Accommodation: The local inns, plethora of log burner filled holiday cottages and bed-and-breakfasts offer a warm and cozy retreat from the cold Winter months. Shop at the deli, rustle up a nice meal, or pop to the pub and fill your wellie boots, then snuggle up with a good book, nice glass of red wine and roaring fire. What could be nicer?

  8. Seasonal Cuisine: Winter in Wells means access to cracking seasonal local produce. The fresh seafood, locally shot game, fabulous cheeses, Winter vegetables and other regional specialties (like the local wines and beers) can be enjoyed in the town's restaurants and pubs, providing a taste of the local Norfolk flavour.

These elements combine to make Wells-next-the-Sea a special and inviting destination in the Winter – offering a unique coastal experience that's different from the sun-kissed Summer season, but equally captivating and with a LOT less people to share it with.

Finally, the walk from the harbour and cafe at the end of the spit, around the headland, past the famous beach huts onto Holkham Beach – and back through the wind-kissed pines – is once done, never forgotten. And always desired…
